Our History
Do the Write Thing (DtWT) was born out of the Kuwait-America Foundation’s desire to reduce youth violence in communities across the United States and its consequences on the lives of youth.
Following the establishment of the Kuwait-America Foundation (KAF) in 1991, several ideas were presented to the KAF board as they sought to focus on building a stronger relationship with the U.S. with an emphasis on education and reducing violence. The pilot program of DtWT was launched in Washington, D.C. in 1994. Building on the program’s success, DtWT expanded into other cities across the U.S. in 1996. Since then, DtWT has been the flagship initiative of KAF and continues to encourage youth to examine and write about the personal effects of violence.
DtWT is a unique education program designed to give middle school students an outlet to communicate in classroom discussions and written form how violence impacts their daily lives. By providing a space for youth to share their stories, experiences, and ideas, DtWT aims to expose the causes and effects of violence, and ultimately to empower young people to reduce violence in their communities.
