All across America, students are facing
youth violence.
About the DtWT movement:
Words that create change. Do the Write Thing.
The Do the Write Thing (DtWT) Challenge is an initiative of the National Campaign to Stop Violence (NCSV) to amplify student voices. The Challenge ignites lawmakers to listen to your stories.
The Challenge
At the beginning of an academic year, educators facilitate middle school students in alleviating violence from their communities through NCSV-sponsored discussion and introspection. These activities align with the common core to enhance the content curriculum and aim to amplify student voices, reinforce a sense of community, and propel their communities to make changes.
How it Works
Students are challenged to answer three questions:
1. How has violence affected my life?
2. What are the causes of youth violence?
3. What can I do to reduce youth violence?
Through any form of writing, students express their experiences, views and solutions to youth violence. These writings are submitted by the educators to the DtWt committees. Each DtWT Community honors these young changemakers by selecting school and community finalists and publishing their powerful words in a local DtWT book. The students are also celebrated with a local recognition ceremony. Two national ambassadors are announced to represent their community in Washington D.C. during the National Recognition Week.
